CHICAGO — Chinese Express says it is planning to ship chiva in a large shipment to Walmart stores in the U.S. in 2019.
Chiva is a specialty cheese made with bison and other animals.
It’s the fourth cheese in a recent string of chiva shipments to Walmart that have been announced in recent months, according to a statement from the company.
“We are very excited to be a part of Walmart’s chiva delivery program and look forward to providing our customers with a high quality cheese in 2019,” said Chia Chen, a senior vice president of operations at China Express.
Walmart says it will ship more than 300,000 metric tons of chitosans to China each year.
Chiva will be made from cow’s milk and goat’s milk, according a Walmart spokeswoman.
Walmart will make its chitin powder from chitins made from sheep’s milk.
China Express said it has received $1.5 billion in funding from Chinese state-owned company CNOOC in addition to a $500 million equity investment from the Alibaba Group.
The company has also secured $150 million in U.K. government loans, a spokeswoman said.
